TELECOMWORLDWIRE-9 January 2009-LINZ and LANCOM partner to provide broadband Internet to rural areas in Austria(C)1994-2009 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

LANCOM Systems GmbH, a German manufacturer of network components for large enterprises and SMEs, public authorities and institutions, has been selected by LINZ AG, a provider of energy and infrastructure services in the central region of Upper Austria, to provide broadband Internet access to 20,000 customers without ADSL.

According to the company, LINZ AG has selected WLAN access points from LANCOM, including robust outdoor models, in combination with specialised directional antennas. The provider installed several hundred high-performance point-to-point links between 2004 and 2008. The links cover distances of several kilometres to provide connections to the nearest Internet backbone for numerous remote towns and villages around Linz, Austria.

The outdoor solution provides up to 20,000 companies and private homes with access to high-speed Internet over wireless. Existing electricity pylons, mobile telephony masts and substations are used as distribution points, many of which already have backbone connectivity, the company said.

No financial details were disclosed.
