LINCOMIX/SAFE-GUARD COMBINATION CLEARED FOR USE IN SWINE FEEDS

LINCOMIX/SAFE-GUARD COMBINATION CLEARED FOR USE IN SWINE FEEDS
SOMERVILLE, N.J., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Lincomix feed medication and Safe- Guard(R) (fenbendazole) dewormer for combination use in swine feeds.
The approval allows feed manufacturers who have received FDA 1900 clearance to produce and sell Type B and Type C medicated feeds containing both compounds. Type B products are commonly referred to as supplements and intermediate premixes, Type C products are generally complete feeds.
"The Lincomix, Safe-Guard combination provides treatment options that meet the needs of many operations in today's pork industry," notes Wayne Jones, swine products manager for The Upjohn Company (NYSE: UPJ). "Lincomix is a safe, effective broad coverage antibiotic that treats and controls some of our most costly swine diseases. Safe-Guard is also a safe product that eliminates a broader range of worms and internal parasites than any other dewormer on the market."
The FDA has approved Safe-Guard for use with all four levels of Lincomix feed medication: 200 grams lincomycin per ton of feed for treatment of mycoplasmal pneumonia; 100 grams for treatment of swine dysentery; 40 grams for continuous control of swine dysentery and 20 grams for growth promotion.
"This approval gives producers the ability to deworm pigs at strategic times without stopping their medication program," says Jim Gerardot, director of the swine/range cattle business unit for Hoechst- Roussel Agri-Vet Company. "Strategic deworming is a must for interrupting worms' life cycles and ridding hogs of these costly parasites."
A survey of more than 1,700 farms from 1989 to 1991 showed 83 percent of the hogs in the grower and 87 percent in the finisher phases had internal parasites.
"The Lincomix/Safe-Guard combination is perfect for tackling these key problem areas," Gerardot points out. "Lincomix treats growing pigs for mycoplasmal pneumonia at the 200-gram level and swine dysentery at 100 grams while Safe-Guard -- fed for at least a three-day or up to a 12-day period -- kills large roundworms, whipworms and a host of other parasites including migrating and tunnelling larvae."
A follow-up Safe-Guard treatment is recommended to break the life cycle of newly acquired worms. Producers can feed the Lincomix/Safe- Guard combination for dysentery control at 40 grams lincomycin per ton of feed, growth promotion at 20 grams and parasite control at both levels.
"The combination at the 40- and 20-gram levels has a zero-day withdrawal making it one of the safest and one of the most effective broad coverage disease and parasite control options available to producers today," says Jones.
