LINCOLN MARK VIII OFF TO A STRONG START

DETROIT, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Even before its official Dec. 26 sales introduction day, Lincoln-Mercury Division has received approximately 15,000 orders for the all-new 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII, a division executive said today.
"The orders we already have in hand represent more than half of our sales target for the first model year," said Lee R. Miskowski, Ford (NYSE: F) vice president and Lincoln-Mercury general manager. "We are confident this early success will continue into the coming year. The Mark VIII is our flagship car and the feedback from our dealers and customers has been outstanding."
The stylish Mark VIII coupe is powered by an all-new aluminum 4.6- liter Four Cam V-8 engine producing 280 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, and 285 foot-pounds of torque at 4,500 rpm. This advanced engine is teamed with a completely new electronically controlled wide-ratio four-speed transmission that provides smooth shifting and improved fuel economy.
MARK VIII offers the highest level of standard equipment ever offered in a Lincoln automobile.
A driver and front passenger air bag supplemental restraint system and an electronic Anti-Lock Braking System are standard. Automatic temperature control air conditioning featuring CFC-free R134a refrigerant, dual remote-control heated mirrors, remote keyless entry system, power windows with one-touch down on the driver's side and an electronic security system also are standard.
The Mark VIII's Dec. 26 introduction date is the day that has marked the introductions of several successful car lines for Ford, including the Mercury Sable and Ford Taurus in 1985 and the Lincoln Continental in 1987.
"The Dec. 26 introduction day has become a successful tradition for us," Mr. Miskowski added. "With products like the Mark VIII and our new Mercury Villager minivan leading the way, we are looking forward to a very good year in 1993."
The Mark VIII is produced at the Wixom Assembly Plant in Wixom, Mich.
