LIKE TO RETIRE AS KEMPER NATIONAL COMMERCIAL LINES CHIEF; JAMES S.
KEMPER ELECTED EXECUTIVE VP; LINDEMANN, SMIALEK TAKE ON NEW DUTIES
LONG GROVE, Ill., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- James S. "Kim" Kemper III, 53, was today elected executive vice president in charge of the commercial lines group of the Kemper National Insurance Companies effective Jan. 1, 1993. He succeeds R. Keith Like, 58, who has announced his retirement. Kim Kemper has been senior vice president of commercial lines underwriting.
Robert A. Lindemann, 39, currently commercial property underwriting officer, will assume most of Kim Kemper's duties. Today, Lindemann was elected vice president, effective Jan. 1, 1993. Additionally, Robert L. Smialek, 44, vice president and manager of the National/International Division, will now manage the companies' loss control engineering department, which had reported to Kemper.
Like joined the Kemper organization in 1959 as an underwriter in the Decatur, Ill., office. He held underwriting positions in Summit, N.J., Los Angeles and Menlo Park, Calif., before being named an assistant manager of one of Kemper's regional divisions. He was elected president of the Mid-Continent Division in 1980. In 1988, when Kemper National was reorganized as a profit center operation, he was named head of the commercial lines group, which, with 1991 sales of $2.6 billion, accounts for about 80 percent of the companies' total sales. He is a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter.
Gerald L. Maatman, Kemper National chairman and chief executive officer, said: "Keith Like's 33 years of exceptional service culminated over the last five years in his successful development of the commercial lines group. His work in that position was typical of his entire career, which has been characterized by integrity, a razor-sharp intellect and an unwavering devotion to effective management principles. We will hate to see him go, but I understand his interest in reaping the fruits of his labor in a well-deserved retirement."
Kim Kemper began his career in 1960 with the organization founded by his grandfather, James Scott Kemper, and formerly headed by his father, James S. Kemper Jr. In 1968, he was named assistant manager of commercial fire and package underwriting. He later held the posts of branch underwriting manager, division underwriting officer and division president. In 1984, he was elected to head the National/International Division, which he managed until 1991. He was named head of commercial lines underwriting in 1987.
Smialek joined the Kemper organization in 1970 as a highly protected risk (HPR) engineering trainee in the Boston office. Following his transfer to the Long Grove headquarters in 1972, he held various HPR underwriting and engineering positions and then was posted to Europe as general manager. In 1982, he returned to Long Grove and was named head of the HPR department. In 1991, he became manager of the National/International Division and was elected a vice president of Kemper National and chief executive officer of American Protection Insurance Company and Kemper International Corporation, Kemper National affiliates. He is a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter.
Lindemann has been with the Kemper National commercial property underwriting department since 1975. He held various supervisory and managerial positions in Kemper National's California offices before being appointed to his most recent position in 1987. He is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter. Kemper National, with 1991 sales of $3.1 billion, operates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and many foreign markets.
