LIGHT SCIENCES AND SHIFTWORK SYSTEMS SIGN LICENSING AGREEMENT

/ADVANCE/ BOSTON /PRNewswire/ -- Light Sciences, Inc. and ShiftWork Systems, Inc. today (Monday, July 12) jointly announced that the two companies have signed a licensing agreement giving ShiftWork Systems, Inc., Cambridge, Mass., exclusive worldwide rights to LSI's patented circadian cycle technology for use in round-the-clock, or shiftwork, operations. LSI retains rights to the technology for use in treating sleep disorders, jet lag, and applications for civil and military flight personnel and rapid deployment military operations.
ShiftWork Systems, Inc. is a newly formed company founded by Medical Portfolio Management Inc., a Cambridge-based investment firm. LSI received equity in ShiftWork Systems, Inc., a fixed payment for the first two years, and will be paid royalties on future business.
The technology was acquired by Light Sciences, Inc. in 1991 from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, where much of the research into shifting the body's internal clock was performed. BWH holds three patents on the technology.
"The many applications this technology addresses makes it efficient to separate the businesses," commented Matthew C. Weisman, president and CEO of Light Sciences, Inc. "LSI will focus all of its efforts on developing projects for sleep disorders, jet lag, and certain military applications, while ShiftWork Systems will move forward with new industrial applications."
"ShiftWork Systems will offer a broad range of systems and services to companies whose employees work on variable schedules or at night. The Light Science's patented technology has shown tremendous potential to improve productivity, safety and employee job satisfaction in these industries, and we look forward to strengthening our leadership position," said Dr. Theodore L. Baker, president of ShiftWork Systems, Inc., and formerly vice president of Scientific Applications for LSI.
The new company will be developing and marketing advanced, computer- controlled lighting systems designed to synchronize shift workers' body clocks to their work schedule. Since 1990, the LSI technology has been used to help NASA's Space Shuttle astronauts adjust their internal clocks for night work in space. Circadian light pilot programs have also been initiated in control rooms at 900MW California electrical utility power plant.
The circadian cycle is a self-sustained biological rhythm driven by an internal biological clock and synchronized to a 24-hour day. Research has established that precise timing of exposure to light of sufficient intensity and darkness is the critical daily synchronizer of this cycle.
