LIGHT HELICOPTER TURBINE ENGINE COMPANY AWARDED $242.8 MILLION ARMY CONTRACT

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Army announced today that it has completed definitization of a $242.8 million contract with the Light Helicopter Turbine Engine Company (LHTEC).
In a joint announcement, Bill Schnell and Don Christiansen, program managers for LHTEC, said, "The T800 engine has already proven itself to be an outstanding performer. This contract will allow us to grow the engine such that LHTEC will have a very competitive product line for the light and medium size helicopter markets well into the 21st century." The five-year contract, ending in September 1997, will provide for research and development of a more powerful version of the T800 gas turbine engine and its installation into the Army's new RAH-66 Comanche helicopter.
Although Army production of the growth T800 engine isn't scheduled till the year 2001, this contract assures that the current levels of engineering personnel on the program will be sustained for the next five years.
The current T800 engine is a 1200 shaft horsepower gas turbine engine that has been under development by LHTEC for the past eight years and is currently being marketed for a number of helicopter applications. The engine has completed all Army Qualification testing and FAA Certification testing, making it available for both military and commercial markets. The new contract will provide for the design and development of a growth version of the engine with a 12-percent increase in output shaft horsepower.
Two of the growth engines will power the Comanche helicopter which is the Army's new Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter. First flight of the helicopter will take place August of 1995 using the current T800 engine, and first flight with the growth T800 will be in September of 1996. LHTEC is a 50/50 partnership between Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM), Indianapolis, and AlliedSignal Propulsion Engines in Phoenix.
