LHC orders for auditing of payment of Rs 480 billion made to IPPs.

LAHORE -- Chief Justice (CJ) Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered for auditing of the payment of Rs 480 billion made to IPPs remarking the burden of incompetence of officers cannot be shifted to the people.

CJ LHC Omar Atta Bandial took up the case for hearing Friday. The counsel for the petitioner told the court power load shedding has registered no decrease despite payment of Rs 480 billion to IPPs and on the other hand recovery of equalization surcharge has been started on electricity bills.

Joint secretary for water and power told the court undeclared load shedding has been abolished.

CJ LHC remarked the burden of inefficiency of the officers cannot be shifted to the shoulders of the people nor the equalization surcharge can be recovered on electricity bills.

The court directed the government to make appointments of all officers including chief executive officer LESCO on merit. The government was further directed by the court that payment of Rs 480 billion made to IPPs be subjected to audit process besides uploading power load shedding schedule on website.

The court while adjourning the hearing of the case till November, 25 sought the record on recovery of equalization surcharge on electricity bills.
