LHC grants 10-day protective bail to Capt Safdar.

LAHORE -- A Lahore High Court (LHC) division bench on Tuesday granted 10-day protective bail to Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar, son-in-law of former premier Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

The bench also directed Capt Safdar to submit two surety bonds of Rs 500, 000 each to avail the relief.

The bench, headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, passed the orders on an application, filed by Capt Safdar for the purpose. At the outset of proceedings, Capt Safdar, along with his counsel, appeared before the bench. The counsel argued that National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Peshawar had launched an inquiry against the petitioner for accumulating assets beyond his known sources of income.

He said that NAB had delivered some notices to petitioner's Mansehra residence just a day before his scheduled appearance on Oct 18, whereas he was currently residing in Jati Umra due to medical complications.

He expressed apprehension that the petitioner might be arrested and pleaded with the bench for grant of protective bail.

At this, the bench granted 10-day protective bail to Capt Safdar.

Safdar, along with Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz, was released from Adiala jail on Sept 19 after the Islamabad High Court suspended their prison sentences in the Avenfield corruption reference.
