 LEXUS SALES, CUSTOMER SATISFACTION RESULTS
AMONG AUTO INDUSTRY '91 BRIGHT SPOTS
DETROIT, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Lexus was one of the auto industry's few bright spots in 1991, setting a sales record and establishing itself as the leader in customer satisfaction, Dave Illingworth, Lexus group vice president and general manager, said at a news conference here today opening the North American International Auto Show.
Lexus sold more than 70,000 cars in 1991, up about 10 percent from 1990. In addition, December sales of more than 8,000 set a one-month record, with both the ES 300 and Lexus sport coupes recording their best months ever.
"As good as sales were in '91, the customer-satisfaction performance was the most important accomplishment of the year," Illingworth said. "For the first time, one nameplate captured all three key J.D. Power customer-satisfaction indexes, and that's a tribute to our dealers and everyone associated with Lexus."
Lexus finished first in Power's Initial Quality Survey and the Sales Satisfaction Index and in a tie for first in the Customer Satisfaction Index. Illingworth noted Lexus had finished fourth in the previous sales satisfaction survey.
"We learned from the earlier study that we could do a better job in certain areas and we went to work," he said. "You can talk all you want about customer satisfaction, but consumers are quick to see through a smokescreen. It takes a willingness to learn from your mistakes and make the effort to improve. Leapfrogging over three other outstanding manufacturers and into the top SSI spot was very gratifying."
Illingworth also introduced a new sport coupe model, the SC 300, equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. The car is just now beginning to reach dealer showrooms.
"We expect this car to fill a niche for owners who would like to take the performance of the sport coupe a step further," he said. "We figure to sell about 2,500 SC 300 5-speeds in 1992."
