LEXINGTON, MASS., MIDDLE SCHOOLS SPORTS PROGRAM SAVED BY CLARK CANDY

LEXINGTON, MASS., MIDDLE SCHOOLS SPORTS PROGRAM SAVED BY CLARK CANDY
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Clark Candy Company has provided the initial funding for a one-year sports grant of $65,000 to the Lexington, Mass., Middle Schools: Jonas "Clarke" Middle School and William Diamond Middle School.
The grant is a one-year contribution from the maker of Clark candy bars, which will provide funding so that the middle schools can continue their interscholastic sports programs. Plans for the grant also include the develpment of an intramural sports program that will provide all students with the opportunity to participate in middle school sports.
"We are very pleased that Clark Candy recognizes the need to support youth sports in an educational setting," said Dr. Jeff Young, superintendent of Lexington Public Schools. "This sports fund partnership with Clark Candy symbolizes a growing need for public and private partnerships in our extra-curricular school programs. We appreciate the generosity (not to mention the taste) of Clark Candy."
The grant to Lexington Middle Schools was offered when Clark Candy, a subsidary of Pittsburgh Food & Beverage Company in Pennsylvania, heard that the school's athletic program was at risk due to a budget decrease. At the same time, Clark Candy was developing its marketing plans for the Greater Boston area. Its plans for the youth market focus on scholastic sports and achievement. Clark has supported various youth sports programs in other markets where the famous candy bar is distributed.
Clark is among the oldest candy bars in America. It was first produced in 1886 and has remained a favorite confection among adults and children. The company also produces Slo-Poke(R) and Black Cow(R) caramel suckers, and the BUN(R) candy bar.
Lexington Middle Schools enroll approximately 1,000 students in the Lexington area.
