SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Levi Strauss & Co. today announced the appointments of two senior executives who will manage separate business operations within its North American division.
James Capon, 41, general manger of Levi Strauss & Co.'s affiliate in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, will become the new president of Dockers(R) U.S.A. Feb. 1, 1994. Capon replaced Bob Siegel, who recently retired from Levi Strauss & Co. and joined the Stride-Rite Corp. as chairman and chief executive officer.
Dockers(R) sportswear, introduced in the United States in 1986, is a line of casual apparel for men, women and children with annual sales of more than $1 billion. Dockers(R) products are sold nationally in major department stores.
Edward T. Murphy, 50, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Brooks Brothers, will join Levi Strauss & Co. Jan. 5 in the newly created position of president of Levi's Only Stores Inc. (L.O.S.), a unite of Levi Strauss North America. In this position, Murphy will represent the company in joint venture arrangements Levi Strauss & Co. is establishing to operate a chain of North American-based Original Levi's Stores.
Murphy will be based in Columbus, Ohio, where Levi Strauss & Co. owns and operates several test stores that sell only Levi's(R) and Docker's(R) products. The company recently announced an agreement in principle to develop a joint venture with Designs Inc., a Boston-based retailer, to establish Original Levi's Stores in the northeastern United States. The joint venture is subject to negotiation of definitive agreements and final terms and regulatory and other approvals.
Murphy succeeds Bill Ress, who served as general manager of L.O.S. Inc. since its inception in 1991. "Ress joined Levi Strauss & Co. from his private consulting practice to help the company launch this important strategic unit," said Bob Rockey, president of Levi Strauss North America. "Consistent with our prior agreement, Bill will return to his consulting practice after an orderly transition in January."
Rockey said about the new appointments: "Each of these individuals brings a unique background critical to the ongoing development of the respective businesses they will operate.
"As the head of a key part of the company's European business, James Capon has demonstrated strategic vision and a style of leadership that brought out the best in his organization, while Ed Murphy brings leadership and substantial experience in the retail store business. I fully expect their contributions to have a meaningful impact on the future growth of the company."
Levi Strauss & Co. is the world's largest branded apparel manufacturer with 1992 sales of $5.6 billion. The company manufactures and markets branded jeans and casual sportswear for men, women and children under the Levi's(R), Docker's(R) and Brittania(R) brands, and employs about 34,000 people worldwide.
