LEVER BROTHERS AND AMERICARES WORK TOGETHER TO PROVIDE RELIEF FOR FLOOD VICTIMS THROUGH DONATIONS AND TOLL FREE 800 NUMBERS

NEW YORK, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Lever Brothers Company announced today that it has made available a toll-free 800 number, 1-800-ASK-WISK, for individuals to call with laundry problems resulting from the flooding in the Midwest. Flood victims can speak with laundry experts (Monday thru Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT) to discuss their laundry questions and garment restoration methods.
Lever Brothers has also donated approximately $300,000 worth of cleaning products, including laundry detergent, fabric softener, dish detergent and bar soap to the flood victims in the Midwest through the disaster relief agency, AmeriCares. As a result of Lever's efforts, Hy- Vee Food Stores, a supermarket chain which operates in seven states, will use several of its stores in the flooded three state area of Iowa, Missouri and Illinois as distribution centers for the emergency supplies. Volunteers from Hy-Vee Food Stores and the Iowa Farm Bureau are working together to distribute these supplies to the rural areas of the three state region which have been the hardest hit by the floods.
"We realize that even with the relatively large number of product units we have donated, our contributions are just a small part of this enormous relief effort," said Sharon L. Morganstern, director, consumer relations, Lever Brothers Company. "We hope our offer of free laundry advice will serve as a helping hand to flood victims as they begin to restore their households."
Mary Giudice, on-site project director for AmeriCares added, "This widespread relief mission is going to be a success thanks to companies like Lever Brothers who are providing the flood victims with the cleaning supplies and help they desperately need."
Other Lever companies in the United States including Van Den Bergh Foods, Chesebrough-Pond's and Thomas J. Lipton have also donated products to flood victims. Donations include food and beverages from Lipton; margarine, pancake mix and syrup from Van Den Bergh Foods; and personal care items from Chesebrough-Ponds.
If any person wishes to make contributions to AmeriCares, the nation's largest totally private and non-profit relief organization, they may call toll-free, 1-800-486-HELP.
