LEVA BECOMES CHAIRMAN OF GPU AS KUHNS RETIRES
 PARSIPPANY, N.J., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- James R. Leva, president

and chief executive officer of General Public Utilities Corporation (NYSE: GPU) today assumed the additional responsibilities of chairman of the board.
Leva, 60, was elected president and CEO in January and succeeds William G. Kuhns, 70, who returned to GPU from retirement as chairman, president and CEO on May 31, 1991, and retired as GPU chairman yesterday. GPU's board elected Leva chairman on May 7, the day of GPU's annual shareholders meeting.
"I'm pleased to assume these additional responsibilities, but as I remarked at our annual shareholders meeting, Bill Kuhns will be a hard act to follow," Leva said.
Kuhns retires after 36 years of service with GPU. After six years with Wisconsin Electric Power Company, Kuhns joined GPU in 1955 and was elected secretary the following year. He was named treasurer in 1957; vice president in 1961; president, CEO and director in 1967, and chairman and CEO in 1974.
Kuhns retired for the first time in 1987 but returned to his executive posts after the untimely death of his successor, John F. O'Leary, later that year. Kuhns retired a second time in 1989 when Standley H. Hoch was elected chairman, president and CEO; Hoch resigned in May 1991.
Among his many accomplishments, probably the most significant during his tenure was leading GPU's recovery from the accident at Three Mile Island Unit 2 in March 1979.
"When I reflect on that most difficult time for us, my thoughts return time and again to the dedication and loyalty of our employees and the many obstacles we all had to overcome," Kuhns said.
"I will carry with me many fond memories of my association with the GPU family. Jim Leva has the ability and experience to lead GPU. I know he will do an outstanding job," Kuhns said.
