What's on readers' minds: The new year is nearly upon us, and the minds of many readers were understandably preoccupied with matters other than filling the Mailbag. Those who did find time to write focused primarily on the Iraq war and, in particular, Sen. Gordon Smith's criticism of the Bush administration's prosecution of that war; on the city of Eugene's official slogan; on the Wildish family's Measure 37 claim in Lane County, and on reporter Anne Williams' Dec. 25 story on talented and gifted students in public schools. The Mailbag wishes all a happy, fruitful and peaceful new year.
