LEON S. COHAN, RETIRED SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF DETROIT EDISON AND FORMER MICHIGAN DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL, JOINS DETROIT LAW FIRM

 DETROIT, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Leon S. Cohan, retired senior vice president and general counsel of Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE) and former deputy attorney general of the state of Michigan, has brought his prestigious record of professional service to the Detroit law firm of Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker where he will concentrate on corporate and regulatory law as counsel to the firm. His practice will include internal corporate and institutional investigations and advice on ethical issues.
 In making the announcement, Managing Partner William G. Barris acknowledged that the firm was fortunate to have a lawyer of Cohan's stature and experience affiliated with its practice. "Leon Cohan has devoted himself to public service for all of his professional career," Barris noted. "He is ideally suited to serve as counsel to the firm, a position that will enable him to draw on his legal and civic background while advising our clients."
 Cohan said he considers this affiliation with Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker as a further extension of his long-standing commitment to public service. "My expectation is that I'll be able to assist corporate and institutional clients in the interpretation and application of corporate and regulatory law," Cohan said. "It's an area of great personal interest and has significance for our economic, political and environmental future," he added.
 Following military service after receiving his law degree in 1953, Cohan practiced law in Detroit until 1958 when he was appointed assistant attorney general of the state of Michigan. In 1961 he was appointed deputy attorney general, a position he held until 1973 when he joined Detroit Edison. He was senior vice president and general counsel of the utility when he retired in June of this year.
 Cohan has served as chairman of the State Board of Ethics; as chairman of the Michigan Council for the Arts; and is president of the Arts Action Alliance. He is the recipient of numerous awards, among them the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Wayne State University Law School, the NAACP-Detroit Branch's Judge Ira W. Jayne Award and he was the Detroit News' "Michiganian of the Year" in 1993.
 Cohan is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan and the Detroit Bar Association. He and his wife Heidi reside in Bloomfield Hills.
 Founded in 1968, Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker is a 30-member firm specializing in business litigation, real estate and business counseling. Three senior partners are listed in "Best Lawyers of America" and among the firm's partners and associates are 11 former law clerks to justices of the Michigan Supreme Court and judges of the Michigan Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court.
