LENFEST GROUP CABLE COMPANIES TO CARRY ABC AFFILIATES IN EXCHANGE FOR CARRIAGE OF ESPN2

POTTSTOWN, Pa., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Lenfest Group has reached an agreement with Capital Cities/ABC Inc. (NYSE: CCB) that will allow cable customers of Lenfest Group subsidiaries to continue to receive ABC programming on their cable lineups.
The Lenfest Group and Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. have signed a retransmission consent agreement permitting the Suburban Cable, South Jersey Cablevision, Cable Oakland, Bay Cablevision and Bridge Cable TV subsidiaries of The Lenfest Group to continue to carry the ABC affiliate in their respective service areas on cable, said Debra Krzywicki, corporate vice president for The Lenfest Group. In exchange for the granting of retransmission consent, the five cable companies will begin carriage of ESPN2, Krzywicki said. ESPN2 is a brand extension of ESPN targeted to reach younger audiences (18-34 years old), and is 80 percent owned by Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. and 20 percent by The Hearst Corporation.
In the Philadelphia market, the deal will allow nearly 300,000 customers of Suburban Cable and South Jersey Cablevision to continue to receive ABC affiliate WPVI-TV (channel 6), Krzywicki said. In the Oakland-San Francisco market, the agreement means the 72,000 customers of Cable Oakland and the 43,000 customers of Bay Cablevision will receive KGO-TV (channel 7). The deal will also permit Bridge Cable TV to air WABC-TV (channel 7) to its 2,600 customers in the New York market.
"We are happy we will continue to provide ABC programming to our customers," Krzywicki said. "We look forward to offering more value to our customers through the carriage of ESPN2."
The 1992 Cable Act includes a provision known as retransmission consent. Commercial broadcast stations that choose retransmission consent can require compensation from cable companies in exchange for granting the cable company permission to carry the station on its cable system. Cable companies and broadcasters must have an agreement for carriage by Oct. 6, 1993.
The Pottstown-based Lenfest Group serves more than 500,000 cable customers nationwide through its Suburban Cable, Cable Oakland, Bay Cablevision, South Jersey Cablevision and Bridge Cable TV subsidiaries.
