LEGGETT DEPARTMENT STORE TO OPEN AT THE SHOPS AT WILLOW LAWN

 BETHESDA, Md., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal Realty Investment Trust (NYSE: FRT) announced that it has signed a lease with Leggett department store to replace the Hess store at the Shops at Willow Lawn in Richmond, Va. The 65,000-square-foot store will undergo a complete renovation prior to its anticipated grand opening in the fall of 1993.
 Leggett Stores, based in Virginia, is one of the Mid-Atlantic's leading department store chains. The company, which opened its first unit in 1927, currently operates 45 stores located throughout Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and Delaware. The new store at the Shops at Willow Lawn will mark the chain's fourth store in the Richmond marketplace. Other stores are located in Chesterfield Towne Center, South Park in Colonial Heights and Virginia Center Commons in Glen Allen.
 Robert A. Leggett III, manager of Real Estate and Store Development of Leggett Stores, stated that the company is very excited about being able to develop more stores within the Richmond marketplace to better serve their customers and continues to look for other opportunities.

 Federal Realty, headquartered in Bethesda, currently owns 41 neighborhood and community shopping centers primarily in the Mid- Atlantic region between the New York metropolitan area and Richmond. The trust specializes in the acquisition of older, well-located centers which can be enhanced through renovation, expansion, reconfiguration, re-leasing and re-merchandising programs.
