LEGENDARY JIM SHOOTER DEFIANTLY CREATES NEW CONCEPT IN TRADING CARDS; COMICS COMPANY DEFIANT CREATES CARD SET THAT IS ACTUALLY A COMIC BOOK

NEW YORK, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The next wave in trading cards is coming and it's been bio-engineered by a genuine legend. Comic book industry icon Jim Shooter and his new company -- the aptly named DEFIANT(TM) -- announced today their new universe of superheroes in the form of a limited-edition, 150-trading-card set manufactured and distributed by the River Group. The PLASM(TM) Zero Issue Trading Card Set marks the first time that a comics universe has ever debuted in the form of trading cards.
Ever the innovator, Shooter designed the card set to be read as a comic book. Collectors can place the cards in numerical order in nine- pocket plastic sheets and read PLASM No. 0(TM) -- the "back-story" that introduces DEFIANT's world of PLASM. A limited-edition binder, to be sold separately but designed exclusively for the set, will also be available. Cards and binders will go on sale in June. The first PLASM comic book will be published in August.
"We're storytellers first, last and always," said Shooter, the 41-year-old former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics and creative force behind Valiant and its Unity story line. "The card set gave us the chance to work with the medium -- to stretch the boundaries. This is not a gimmick, and it's not anything you've seen before. It is the next revolution in trading cards: a fabulous story that fans will want to own."
The Best in the Business Create the Future
Created and written by Shooter, the card set features the collaborative art work of the best in the industry. The art is created by "penciler" David Lapham -- well known for his work on Harbinger, H.A.R.D. Corps and RAI -- and "inker" Michael Witherby, who previously worked for Marvel. Color is added to the art by Janet Jackson -- former "head colorist" for Harbinger and Magnus Robot Fighter. "I've brought together the folks I love to work with," Shooter explains.
PLASM: A Parallel Universe, Entirely Unique
The set introduces PLASM -- the cornerstone of the new DEFIANT universe. PLASM is a world separated from Earth by a "nanosecond-thin reality veil," according to its creator. It is a place that is entirely organic: technology is advanced but bio-systemic. In short, everything is alive, even things that seem to be machines.
"We asked ourselves, what if you had complete control of genetic engineering?" Shooter said. "What would the social mores be? Everything would be recycled: murder would be a misdemeanor, but failure to recycle would be a capital offense. There is a callousness toward death in PLASM society that is overwhelming. PLASM is brutal and horrifying to the sensibilities of our kind, and even to some of their kind. One such is Lorca, a high-ranking Non-Zom, or freethinker, in the military.
"Lorca discovers the dimensional barrier to Earth, brings 10,000 Earthlings across the barrier and genetically re-engineers them to form a superarmy to spearhead a revolution. Haste makes for a miscalculation, and only five survive: a middle-aged housewife, a one- armed working man, a soldier, a college girl and an Episcopal minister. Fearing defeat, Lorca turns on them, but underestimates both the power he's given them and a power he doesn't fully understand, the power of the human spirit."
Cards and Comics: The Details and the Next Wave
The PLASM No. 0 story will be told on 117 of the 150 cards that make up the complete set. The remaining 33 cards will introduce the extraordinary and visually outrageous characters who populate the PLASM universe. The cards will be protected with a glossy, ultraviolet coating. Packs of nine cards will be sold for a suggested retail price of 99 cents per pack.
"I'm very excited about this project," said Shooter. "Think about it -- two forms of entertainment becoming one. DEFIANT is the greatest odyssey I've ever been on, and this marriage of trading cards and comics is a fabulous beginning."
