LEEDMARK NAMED ONE OF THE BEST DESIGNATED NEW RETAIL STORES
 IN THE UNITED STATES
GLEN BURNIE, Md., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Leedmark in Glen Burnie has been named one of the 13 best designed new retail stores in the United States by Chain Store Age Executive, an industry publication.
Leedmark was the only store in the Baltimore-Washington area to be recognized in the magazine's 10th annual "Retail Stores of the Year" competition. Stores were judged on the basis of design concept, cost-effective use of materials, marketing strategy, and ease of shopping. The contest attracted entries from every field of retailing, which were judged by a panel of six experts in store design and construction.
According to the magazine's editors, the winning stores "share an uncanny talent for serving the needs of their customers and local markets ... this year's winners are defined by a functionalism that seeks to make shopping more appealing and less overwhelming."
They noted that: "Glitz and theatrics have taken a backseat to durability. Designs that can stand the test of time are a priority in today's harsh economic environment."
Leedmark, which opened last May, is the first one-stop shopping hybrid market in the United States where consumers can buy all of their basic needs for apparel, non-food and food items under one roof.
Leedmark spokesman Edward Segal said the store sells "high quality name brand merchandise at the lowest price every day of the year. Customers do not have to wait for a sale to get the lowest possible price on any item, since every one of the 85,000 items we sell are sold at their true price every day."
In a report released last September, the Washington Consumers' Checkbook magazine found that Leedmark's prices for a variety of merchandise were substantially lower than at other stores it surveyed in the Washington-Baltimore area.
Segal said Leedmark's policy of every day low prices has been popular with consumers, noting that 140,000 to 150,000 shoppers visit the store every month.
Special Leedmark features include a consumer-friendly layout with large, easy to read directional signs; checkout stands with television monitors that broadcast CNN programs and Leedmark commercials; coin-operated shopping carts; a computerized cake decorating service; a computerized paint-matching service; 36 customer service phones throughout the store; and computer terminals that let consumers check the price of Universal Price Code items for themselves.
The interior and exterior design of the store was conceptualized in collaboration with Cogem International of Montreal.
The design of the building was implemented by CKL Architects of Rockville, Md.; High Construction of Lancaster, Pa., served as the construction manager; the interior design and lighting was implemented and coordinated by Off The Wall Company, Inc., of Telford, Pa.
Key suppliers included laminates from Formica of Piscataway, N.J., and Wilsonart of New York; and wall tiles from American Olean in Lancaster.
Barbara Barker, president of Off The Wall Company, said Leedmark's interior was designed so that it would be consumer- friendly and reflect the hybrid nature of the store.
"We worked closely with Leedmark officials to help create an atmosphere where people would feel comfortable shopping in a large store. Designing an enjoyable shopping experience was of paramount importance," Barker said.
