LEE JOINS SCRIPPS HOWARD'S HOME AND GARDEN TV NETWORK

CINCINNATI, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Lee Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: LEE) today signed a six-year agreement to affiliate nine of its television stations with Scripps Howard Broadcasting's (NASDAQ: SCRP) new Home & Garden Television Network.
The 24-hour national cable network is scheduled for launch in fall 1994.
As affiliates, the Lee stations will ask their local cable systems to carry The Home and Garden Television Network in exchange for permission to continue carrying the station's own signal. The Lee stations also will provide programming for local insertion on the cable network.
"The Home & Garden Television Network is a great opportunity for both broadcasters and cable operators to participate in the evolution of quality programming," said Gary Schmedding, Lee's vice president for broadcasting.
Lee, based in Davenport, Iowa, owns and operates: KGUN, Tucson, Ariz.; KMTV, Omaha, Neb.; KRQE, Albuquerque, N.M.; KBIM, Roswell, N.M.; KOIN, Portland, Ore.; WSAZ, Huntington, W.Va.; and in Hawaii, KGMB, Honolulu, KGMD, Hilo, and KGMV, Wailuku. Combined, the stations reach 1,834,000 cable subscribers.
Seven of the Scripps Howard stations are members of the HGTV affiliates group, which is being expanded to include a broadcast station in each of the nation's television markets.
Cable systems owned by Scripps Howard Broadcasting and its parent, The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP), will carry The Home & Garden Television Network.
Also, Continental Cablevision Inc., the nation's third-largest cable operator, has signed a six-year agreement to carry the new network in exchange for permission to also carry the signals of HGTV broadcast affiliates. Scripps Howard is negotiating carriage agreements with other multiple system operators as well.
The Home & Garden Television Network will feature 24 hours of daily programming focused on home repair/remodeling, gardening, decorating and home electronics.
Scripps Howard Broadcasting's parent, The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP), also operates 20 daily newspapers, cable systems with 680,000 subscribers, and United Media, a leading syndicator and licensor of news features and comics.
