LEDERLE-PRAXIS BIOLOGICALS DONATING VACCINES TO COMBAT TETANUS IN MIDWEST FLOOD AREA

WAYNE, N.J., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Lederle-Praxis Biologicals, a division of American Cyanamid Company, announced today that it is donating 10,000 doses of its Tetanus and Diphtheria Toxoids vaccine to assist residents in the flood-ravaged areas of the Midwest. Lederle- Praxis is providing the vaccine to the state public health departments of Iowa, Missouri and South Dakota, where tetanus and diphtheria are major health concerns because of the current flooding.
Tetanus, commonly known as lockjaw, is an acute infectious disease which may be transported by contaminated water and can be life- threatening. Diphtheria, an acute contagious disease spread by airborne water particles passed from person to person, is also a life-threatening condition. Health officials in the flood-stricken midwestern states fear that sandbaggers and rescuers working in the sewage-infested flood waters may be exposed to both illnesses.
Sen. Christopher Bond (R-Mo.), said, "In this difficult period, we are grateful to Lederle-Praxis Biologicals for swiftly coming to our need. The people of Missouri have the courage to prevail, but the generous assistance of caring companies like Lederle-Praxis will help us through this disaster."
Ronald J. Saldarini, Ph.D., president of Lederle-Praxis Biologicals, said, "As a company dedicated to disease prevention, we are pleased to lend our support to the people who have been so devastated by this flood. We want to do our part in preventing the spread of disease so families can start rebuilding their lives."
In addition, Cyanamid's agricultural products division earlier this year contributed $50,000 to the American Red Cross for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Howard Minigh, president of the agricultural products division, presented the check on May 12 to Elizabeth Dole, president of the American Red Cross.
Cyanamid and its various divisions have facilities and employees in the flooded states.
Lederle-Praxis Biologicals is a leading U.S.-based vaccine developer, manufacturer and distributor of several important childhood and adult vaccines. The company currently distributes vaccines to prevent polio, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Haemophilus b disease, pneumococcal pneumonia and viral influenza. An acellular pertussis DTP vaccine also is available from the company. Ongoing vaccine research programs include those for middle ear infection, acute respiratory disease, diarrhea, gonorrhea and herpes.
