LEDERLE STANDARD PRODUCTS ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF ALPRAZOLAM TABLETS, ONE OF THE FIRST GENERIC VESIONS OF TOP-SELLING ANTI-ANXIETY DRUG

 WAYNE, N.J., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Lederle Laboratories announced today that an ANDA-approved generic version of The Upjohn Company's top- selling anti-anxiety agent, XANAX(R), will be available. Lederle Standard Products received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to market Alprazolam Tablets beginning Wednesday, Oct. 20 when the Xanax patent expires. Lederle is the first company to receive FDA approval for all four strengths marketed by the innovator. Lederle Standard Products' Alprazolam will be available in .25mg, .5mg and 1.0mg tablets each in bottles of 100s and 500s, and 2.0mg tablets in bottles of 100s.
 Alprazolam is indicated for the management of anxiety disorder or for the short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety.
 Xanax is one of the largest branded products to come off patent and is the top-selling anti-anxiety medication in its class in the U.S. It currently holds close to 50 percent of the benzodiazepine market. U.S. sales for Xanax for 1992 totaled approximately $615 million and U.S. sales for the first six months of 1993 totaled approximately $292 million.
 Alprazolam is one of six Lederle Standard Products' ANDAs cleared by the FDA in the last 12 months. Alprazolam joins the existing line of Lederle Standard Products which includes generic versions of the widely prescribed and top-selling medications Cardizem(R) (Diltiazem tablets), Tenormin(R) (Atenolol tablets), Orudis(R) (Ketoprofen capsules), and most recently Lopid(R) (Gemfibrozil tablets) and VANCOCYN(R) (vancomycin for oral solution). Additionally, Lederle plans to launch a generic version of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Naprosyn(R) (Naproxen tablets) which will go off patent Dec. 21, 1993.

The Lederle Standard Products label, established 20 years ago, represents generic alternatives for more than 60 chemical entities in excess of 200 package styles.
