LECSTAR & LUCENT UNVEIL NEXT-GENERATION NETWORK FOR SOUTHEAST.

LecStar Communications Corporation, an Atlanta-based integrated communications provider (ICP), and Lucent Technologies have turned up the first phase of LecStar's new, multi-million-dollar high-speed network built with Lucent's 7R/E Next Generation Network Solutions.

LecStar markets services on a region-wide basis across the Southeastern United States. Its network, which is being introduced in Georgia, integrates packet data and traditional switching systems to deliver high-quality and low-cost, bundled telecommunications services to the customer.

"Lucent's suite of broadband network equipment allows us to deliver our value-added services on a single connection without the geographic limitations of DSL, wireless and other broadband solutions," said R.P. McFarland, president of LecStar Network Operations. "This will allow LecStar's broadband customers to receive their local service, long distance, high-speed Internet and future applications on a 'liquid' bandwidth connection at a very competitive price point," McFarland said.

"Liquid bandwidth enables a new level of communications functionality and flexibility. Unlike channelized circuits, LecStar's liquid bandwidth is dynamic, allowing reconfiguration in real-time to meet customers' changing bandwidth and application requirements," said McFarland.

Providing local, long distance and data services in the business and residential markets, LecStar is one of the first ICPs to use a complete suite of next-generation Lucent hardware and software products -- the 7R/E NOW Switch, the Lucent Softswitch, MAX TNT and PacketStar PSAX Multiservice media gateways.

"Lucent's Softswitch is the centerpiece of our 7R/E network architecture, which brings the reliability and quality of traditional phone networks to IP networks," said Frances Connor, sales vice president for Lucent in Atlanta. "Softswitch is the 'brains' of a new network architecture that enables LecStar to quickly introduce new services and more efficiently manage the convergence of voice and data traffic on its networks."

The Lucent Softswitch, in combination with Lucent's industry-leading media gateways, offers a series of end-to-end solutions designed to address a variety of challenges facing service providers like LecStar, including the critical need to manage the growing Internet traffic moving across existing networks. Lucent's Softswitch supports both Internet Protocol (IP) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)-based networks.
