LECHTERS REPORTS MAY SALES HARRISON, N.J., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Lechters, Inc.
(NASDAQ: LECH), today reported sales of $16.6 million for the four-week period ended May 23, 1992, an increase of 25 percent over sales of $13.3 million during May 1991. The company's comparable store sales decreased 1.2 percent during the four-week period ended May 23, 1992, as compared with May 1991.
Sales of $69.5 million for the 17 weeks ended May 23, 1992, represent an increase of 29 percent over sales of $54.1 million for the same period in 1991. For the 17 weeks ended May 23, 1992, the company's comparable store sales increased 3.0 percent. During the first two weeks of May, the company experienced a material sales decline in its California stores and a moderate sales decline in its other stores located in and near urban centers during and immediately after the civil disturbance that took place in Los Angeles. None of the company's 465 locations sustained any physical property damage or loss.
