LEARNER DRIVER RUNS DOWN AND KILLS DAD; Son at wheel as Merc 'lurched forward'.

A DOCTOR died after being knocked down by his learnerdriver son in a golf club car park.

Dr Salim Verjee was fatally injured when the car lurched forward just moments after the lad had got behind the wheel for a lesson with his brother.

Paramedics rushed to the scene but the 66-year-old died later in hospital with his distraught sons at his bedside.

The tragedy happened at the exclusive Sonning Golf Club in Sonning-onThames, Berks, where he had been due to attend a medical conference.

Shocked doctors and golfers dashed from the clubhouse to help Dr Verjee, whose left leg had been badly mangled by the silver Mercedes.

A witness said: "One of the sons, who was learning to drive, was being given a lesson by his sibling. Unfortunately the car lurched into the father and knocked him down. The sons were distraught after they saw what had happened."

Dr Verjee, who qualified as a doctor in 1969, was a blood specialist. Last night at his pounds 500,000 home in Fyfield, near Abingdon, Oxon, his family were too upset to comment. The accident happened around midday on Saturday.

A spokesman for the golf club - where membership costs pounds 1,145-ayear - described his death as a "nasty incident". Police appealed for witness, adding that the powerful Mercedes car had been impounded by accident investigators.

An inquest into Dr Verjee's death has been opened and adjourned.
