LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS HONORS UNION CARBIDE
 FOR PROMOTING SOLID WASTE EDUCATION
DANBURY, Conn., May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Carbide Corporation (NYSE: UK) received a Leadership Award from the League of Women Voters Education Fund at a gala ceremony in Washington, D.C., this week, honoring individuals and organizations for their contributions to civic life. The League acknowledged Union Carbide's contribution to the Education Fund's efforts to provide clear and balanced information on solid waste management and recycling issues. The League's Solid Waste Education project, supported by Union Carbide, is designed to encourage the public's informed participation in solid waste policy debates at all levels of government.
"Communities around the country are seeking to determine environmentally sound solutions to the solid waste problem," said Union Carbide Polyolefins President Roger Staub in accepting the award. "And we in the plastics industry want citizens to be fully apprised of the difficult technical, economic and environmental issues concerning solid waste management," he added.
The League also noted that "Union Carbide has backed up its education commitment with action," referring to the company's recent opening of the nation's first full-scale multi-plastics recycling facility in Piscataway, N.J. The plant is capable of recycling more than 80 percent of the plastics found in the average household.
