Continental Will Design Future Tires on Upgraded Cray
 Research System
EAGAN, Minn., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Continental AG (Conti), the fourth largest producer of tires worldwide, and parent company of Akron, Ohio-based General Tire, has ordered a CRAY Y-MP 2E supercomputer. The system will be installed second quarter at Conti's facility in Hannover, Germany, Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), announced today.
The new system replaces a CRAY X-MP system, and will be used for finite element analysis problems to design and test the durability of new tires. The additional power of the CRAY Y-MP 2E system will allow Conti tire designers to calculate larger, more complex problems and shorten its design cycles.
"During the past seven years we've seen the worldwide automotive industry use Cray Research technology to gain design insight into more and more automobile components," said Bryan Little, vice president of Cray Research's European operations. "Today, this includes everything from the aerodynamics of the car, to engine combustion, airflow under the hood and through the interior of the car, and the car's tires.
"We are pleased to provide Continental, a world leader in supplying tires, with the computational resources needed to bring new, better- performing tires to market faster," he said.
According to Klause Peinze, director of data processing (DP), "Conti DP is happy to be able to provide our R&D engineers with substantially increased computing power. This is needed for more sophisticated product simulation, and
to help shorten development cycles." Peinze said the new system is the main compute server in a wide area network and will be accessed from various Conti R&D locations.
Cray Research has 298 systems installed worldwide, of which 90 are located in Europe and 27 in the worldwide automotive industry.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
