LEADING FOOD EDITORS RATE BEST-SELLING CHOCOLATES AT BLIND TASTING EVENT

LEADING FOOD EDITORS RATE BEST-SELLING CHOCOLATES AT BLIND TASTING EVENT
NEW YORK, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- With Valentine's Day fast approaching, 15 of the nation's leading food editors -- representing print media including Gourmet, Ladies Home Journal, Glamour, Associated Press, and United Press International -- rated creme-filled chocolate at a blind tasting held yesterday at New York City's famed Waldorf Astoria hotel.
The chocolates included European-style manufacturers Godiva and Lindt, and American companies Whitman, Russell Stover, and Brown & Haley.
The results are significant for budget-conscious consumers who, in these tight economic times, still want to give their loved ones the best possible quality.
While European quality won out among the food experts, with Godiva and Lindt garnering the highest scores, Tacoma, Wash., confectioner Brown & Haley -- known for its world-famous Almond Roca Buttercrunch and for the fact that it uses only natural ingredients -- outscored the other American companies and was rated close in overall quality to the European chocolates which cost up to three times the price. (The retail price for a one-pound box of Godiva and Lindt is $25 and $17, respectively; a one-pound box of Brown & Haley's Belgian Cremes costs $6.75.)
According to Julia Wesson, president of PalaTex, Inc., a sensory evaluation firm which hosted the tasting event, "These results indicated that price doesn't necessarily reflect a chocolate's quality -- a key message in today's economy."
The chocolate tasting was part of PalaTex's education campaign to teach people how sensory evaluation techniques provide an easy and effective way to determine the best chocolate.
