Athens Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia and world No. 1 Lin Dan of China advanced to the men's singles semifinals of the Yonex Open Japan badminton tournament Friday.
Hidayat beat No. 2 seed Peter Gade of Denmark 15-13, 12-15, 15-12 in their quarterfinal at Yoyogi national gymnasium annex to set up a semifinal meeting with No. 3 seed Chinese Chen Hong, who eliminated Chen Yu with a 17-14, 15-4 victory in an all-Chinese affair.
Top-seeded Lin came from behind to down compatriot Bao Chunlai 11-15, 15-6, 15-4. In Saturday's semifinals, Lin faces fourth-seeded Dane Kenneth Jonassen who breezed past Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia with a 15-10, 15-7 victory.
Later Friday, Kanako Yonekura, the only Japanese left in the woman's draw, crashed out after a 6-11, 13-11, 11-9 defeat to No. 4 seed Wang Chen of Hong Kong, who takes on No. 1 seed Zhang Ning of China in the semifinals.
Zhang ousted fellow Chinese Lu Lan with an 11-6, 11-0 rout while third-seeded Hongyan Pi of France joined her in the last four after beating China's Zhu Lin 11-4, 6-11, 11-7. In the semis, Pi will take on second-seeded Chinese Xie Xingfang, who downed compatriot Jiang Yanjiao 11-5, 11-2.
Kumiko Ogura and Reiko Shiota, meanwhile, became the first Japanese pair in 12 years to reach the women's doubles semifinals after a 15-12, 15-5 win over fellow Japanese Satoko Suetsuna and Miyuki Maeda.
