LCI INTERNATIONAL UNVEILS ALL-AMERICA PLAN RESIDENTIAL CALLING
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- LCI International, the Columbus-based worldwide telecommunications company (formerly known as LiTel Telecommunications Corporation), today unveiled its new residential calling services -- the "All-America Plan" to residential long-distance users. The plan offers residential customers a wide range of features that best suit every family's many day-to-day calling needs.
"LCI International has primarily been a business-to-business carrier operating in the Midwest," said H. Brian Thompson, LCI International chairman and chief executive officer. "We are in the midst of an expansion program where LCI will soon be known throughout the world as a national and international long distance provider." The company recently changed its name from LiTel to LCI International to better reflect to customers and various publics its worldwide capabilities.
"Our market research shows that today's residential customers need quality long distance services that are competitively priced, easy to use and provide excellent all-around value," added LCI International President Thomas J. Wynne. "That is why we have developed the 'All-America Plan.'"
The LCI "All-America-Plan" offers residential customers six convenient features that have been designed to meet their needs.
One Flat Rate Across the Country
The key element of this new offering is LiTel's direct-dial (1+) service that offers postalized rates across the United States. Postalized rates mean the call is not distance sensitive. Postalized rates allow LCI customers to call anywhere within the continental United States at the same rate whether the call travels 100 miles or 3,000 miles.
"Like a stamp, the cost of the call is the same regardless of the distance it must travel throughout the country," said Joshua H. Funt, director of residential services. "The only difference is the charge based on the time the call was placed -- either 17 cents per minute day rates or 14 cents per minute non-day rates. Most carriers offer pricing that is distance sensitive as well as time-of-day sensitive. This creates an enormous rate table and makes knowing how much you pay difficult. The LCI 'All-America Plan' avoids all that confusion."
 WorldCard
The recently introduced WorldCard will also be available as part of LCI's residential package. The WorldCard offers international calling capabilities between foreign countries using English language audio-response prompting and operator assistance for calls placed to or from the United States. The key to WorldCard's success with residential customers will be its extremely comeptitive domestic rates -- the card offers a postalized rate of 25 cents per minute plus a 25 cent-per-call surcharge for calls made within the United States. In comparision, AT&T has an 80-cent-per-call surcharge and both MCI and Sprint have a 75 cent-per-call surcharge. Also, AT&T, MCI and Sprint rates vary according to the time of day the call is placed and its distance.
 700 Information Service
Another feature of the "All-American Plan" is the use of LCI's library of information services. These competitively-priced services are frequently updated to provide information including national news, stock data, weather forecasts, lottery results, soap opera recaps, sports scores, horoscopes and entertainment news. Like the other services, the information service will also feature postalized rates and can be accessed via a 700 number from any phone line presubscribed to LCI.
"The information services offered by LCI are timely and of general interest to consumers," Wynne said. "We are avoiding any controversial information services. Our goal is to provide our customers with access to all the service and information they want in a value-packed offering that is at their finger tips."
 Operator Services
All LCI residential customers have access to operators 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the purpose of placing collect, person-to-person and credit card billed calls plus the convenience of directory assistance.
 International Calling
LCI offers residential customers under the "All-America Plan" direct-dial service to 178 countries around the world utilizing the same dialing plan as all other major long distance carriers.
 One Telephone Bill
In order to increase value to the customer, LCI has made arrangements in its "All-America Plan" to include its monthly bill with that of the customer's local telephone carrier. With this feature, LCI customers need only write one check each month to cover their monthly telephone usage - including local, long distance and any international calls that are placed.
"We have found that customers prefer receiving one bill and then writing one check each month for their telephone service," Funt said. "This feature alone has great appeal to residential users, but is just one of LCI's many features that are part of the 'All-America Plan'."
"LCI is a full-service long distance company," Funt explained, "and offers everything you would expect, including twenty-four hour customer service and directory assistance. Based on experience, we've found that most residential long distance plans are complex and difficult to understand. LCI is offering a simple, well-rounded package that meets the customer's needs and is easy to understand. The 'All-America Plan' will deliver a solid value without smoke and mirrors."
LCI will announce that it will begin accepting orders for the "All-America Plan" on a state-by-state basis as final regulatory approvals are granted. In the meantime, questions about the service may be directed to Deborah Garwick, 800-686-5075.
