LCI INTERNATIONAL OPENS OFFICES IN DES MOINES, CEDAR RAPIDS; LONG DISTANCE COMPANY TO BRING 50 NEW JOBS TO IOWA BY END OF YEAR

DES MOINES, Iowa, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Corporate officials of LCI International today will host a reception in downtown Des Moines for business leaders to announce the opening of sales offices in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.
Governor Terry Branstad will attend the reception to welcome LCI President Thomas J. Wynne and Iowa Regional Vice President Terry L. Keenan. The reception will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 101 East Locust in Des Moines, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Governor and Wynne will each make brief remarks at 4:30 p.m.
The LCI office in Des Moines is located in Suite 605 of the Merle Hay Tower. The company will open an office in Cedar Rapids within the next month. Initially, LCI will employ some 22 professionals in both cities and expects to expand to 50 or more jobs by the end of the year.
"The announcement of offices in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids opens a new window toward the west for our company," said H. Brian Thompson, LCI's chairman and chief executive officer. "Iowa has offered a competitive environment for telecommunication companies going back to the days of divestiture. We look forward to sharing the quality of our product and superior customer service in this marketplace."
LCI International is among the fastest-growing privately held telecommunications companies in the nation. "We continue to focus on geographically expanding our long distance services," said Thompson. "The company has been built on providing superior personal service and customer satisfaction. It is our plan to bring this same philosophy to new customers in Iowa."
Founded in 1983, LCI International is a worldwide, facilities-based telecommunications company that provides a full line of voice, data and video transmission services to meet its customer's needs. During the past two years, LCI has experienced a strong growth pattern. In 1992 LCI's minutes of use over its network grew by 26.5 percent and its revenue grew by more than 16 percent over 1991 to nearly $300 million.
LCI's steady growth has been attributed to a variety of new services and promotions including the company's nationwide origination, simplified pricing approaches and a focused sales attack on both its existing market and new cities in the east, midwest and southeast areas of the country.
"LCI has made a variety of aggressive changes to its services and marketing strategy to position itself within the telecommunications industry as one of the premier full-service, long-distance carriers," Thompson explained. "We believe those changes have produced remarkable results and LCI is having a positive impact on the marketplace."
LCI International, with headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, is a privately held company whose shareholders include New York-based E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Co., Inc., the largest venture banking firm in the United States, and Primus Venture Partners, Cleveland, one of the largest venture capital firms in the Midwest.
