Byline: Bob Keefer The Register-Guard

Art, music, wine and a bustling downtown scene are in store for the very first First Friday Art Walk of the spring.

The free monthly guided walking tour of downtown art venues kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the New Zone Gallery, 164 W. Broadway.

This month's host is sculptor Kate Ali, who teaches at Lane Community College and is a board member at Lane Arts Council, which organizes the tour.

The walk stops for 30 minutes at each participating gallery. Artists and gallery owners will be on hand for discussions of the exhibited work.

New Zone, the first stop on this weekend's tour, is showing "Zone for All," a non juried show that includes work by everyone from beginners to pros. Music at the reception will be provided by bluesman Jerry Zybach.

The second stop will be at White Lotus Gallery, 767 Willamette St., with a show of works by Morris Graves.

Next stop is Out on a Limb gallery, 191 E. Broadway, which is showing nature-inspired acrylic paintings by Oregon artist Shanna Trumbly as well as renderings, shell books and journals by Shel Neal.

At 7 p.m., the tour is scheduled to reach Full City Pearl Street Caf and Palace Bakery, 842 and 844 Pearl St. Four artists are exhibiting work there: Bill Stredde, Euphemia Wesley and Ricardo Di Napoli are showing paintings, and Scott Floyd is showing stained glass.

The final stop will be at Oregon Art Supply, 1020 Pearl St., which is showing "Transparency & Symbols," current work by Rebecca Mannheimer. She will give a demonstration on using encaustic medium from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A large number of other galleries stay open for First Friday even though they're not on the official tour.

Check out especially:

"Free People" at the Jacobs Gallery in the Hult Center, Seventh Avenue and Willamette Street, for a look at what's happening in the Portland art scene.

"Squaring the Circle," a series of mixed-media collages exploring the circular form by Tina Schrager at the Art Annex/Karin Clarke Gallery, 749 Willamette St.

The Eugene Storefront Art Project, 224 E. 11th Ave., has "All Woman," featuring women artists and art that celebrates women exclusively.

"Figure & Form," work by Michael Gonzalez, Jenny Gray and Marsha Maverick Wells, at Schrager & Clarke Gallery, 760 Willamette St.
