LAWRY'S RESTAURANTS INC. PRIMES THIRD GENERATION FRANK PRESIDENT
LOS ANGELES, April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Lawry's Restaurants Inc. announced today that Richard R. Frank has been named president and chief operating officer of the renowned restaurant company founded in 1938. Richard R. is the third generation of the Frank family to hold the title of president at Lawry's Restaurants.
A member of the company's board of directors since 1979, Richard R., 36, officially joined the restaurant group in 1982 as director of long- range planning. Prior to his promotion, he served as vice president, administration and chief financial officer. Richard R. will continue to report to his father, Richard N. Frank, who remains chief executive officer and will become chairman of the company.
"Our attention to customers has been the most important key to our success," said Richard N. "I am proud that my son is carrying on the tradition established by my father, Lawrence L. Frank, and my uncle, Walter Van de Kamp, who together founded Lawry's Restaurants."
With the help of another brother-in-law, Theodore J. Van de Kamp, Lawrence had, by 1915, co-founded Van de Kamp's Holland Dutch Bakers Inc., where he was president until its sale to General Host Corp. in 1956. Lawrence's nephew and Richard N.'s cousin, former California Attorney General John K. Van de Kamp, is a member of Lawry's Restaurants board of directors.
In his new position, Richard R. will oversee the day-to-day functions of the company's restaurants,, as well as the development of the new Lawry's The Prime Rib, soon to be located at 100 N. La Cienega Blvd., Beverly Hills, Calif.
"Our commitment to quality and outstanding service will not change," said Richard R. "We will continue to offer the highest standards in all areas of our restaurants' operations."
Among the most successful families serving the restaurant business today, the Franks and Van de Kamps have owned and operated quality restaurants for a span of seven decades.
The oldest is Scottish-themed Tam O'Shanter, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. Another is the award-winning Five Crowns in Corona del Mar, Calif., which has been called the most authentic replica of an English country inn in North America.
The most famous of the families' restaurants is Lawry's The Prime Rib, located on La Cienega Boulevard in Beverly Hills, which began as Lawrence's dream in 1938. The unique single entree of prime ribs of beef served from a silver serving cart with a "spinning salad" tossed tableside made restaurant history. Two additional Lawry's The Prime Rib restaurants opened in Chicago in 1974 and in Dallas in 1983.
Another innovation of Lawry's The Prime Rib was the "special seasoning," which Lawrence developed in his home kitchen for use in his new restaurant. Lawry's Seasoned Salt was so well-received by the restaurant's diners that it began to disappear from the tables and, soon thereafter, a separate business was established to market the product. After World War II, Lawry's Foods Inc. was expanded, developed and headed by Richard N. and later sold in 1979 to Thomas J. Lipton Co. Lawry's Restaurants Inc. remains a separate family owned company.
Richard R., a graduate of Pomona College and Harvard University, is also a director of the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau, a member of the Rotary Club and director of the Sycamores. He and his wife, Jolley, reside in Pasadena, Calif., with their three children, Merin, Taylor and Carter.
