LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY: THIS WEEK AT THE LAB

LIVERMORE, Calif., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is a digest of feature and news stories from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory which includes a contact name and telephone number:
Physicists Confirm Supernova Role in Formation of Heavy Elements
Using the world's most complete computer model that predicts what occurs during the first few seconds of a supernova star, Lawrence Livermore physicist James R. Wilson and his colleagues have helped confirm the theory that all of the heavy-metal elements found on planets, asteroids and other bodies are formed during supernovas. Their model found that the conditions shown to exist near the center of this cataclysmic stellar explosion are correct for forming the heavy elements found throughout the universe.

Technical Women's Symposium Features NASA Astronaut
NASA astronaut Tamara Jernigan, who logged more than 455 hours in space while orbiting Earth, is the keynote speaker at the Technical Women's Symposium, May 6-7, 1993, at the Lafayette Park Hotel, Lafayette, Calif. The symposium will highlight the technical achievements of lab women and encourage networking and professional development. Other featured speakers are astrophysicist Claire Max, leader of the lab's Laser Guide Star Project; and organizational psychologist Cynthia Scott, who's written nine books, including Take This Job and Love It.

Modern Technology to Protect Ancient Treasures
Lab computer scientists and engineers, working with a University of California archaeologist, are developing a high-tech system to protect archaeological treasures from looters and vandals. The system, called HIPROTECT, uses an array of wireless sensors at a remote site to detect possible intrusions then alerts law enforcement by cellular phone. The system also may have other applications in law enforcement, such as the detection of drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

The Shifting Role of Government in Supporting High-Risk R&D
Roger Werne, head of engineering at the lab, says that national labs like Livermore should team with U.S. companies to solve major technical problems that neither can tackle alone. Such collaborations to address "industrial grand challenge problems," are a natural extension of the Lab's mission -- to use science, engineering and technology to solve the nation's key problems. Werne made his remarks during the 45th Manufacturers' Alliance for Productivity and Innovation conference in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
