LAURA WALTHER NAMED GIFT REGISTRY DIRECTOR AT SERVICE MERCHANDISE

NASHVILLE, Tenn., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Service Merchandise Company, Inc. (NYSE: SME) has named Laura Walther to the new position of director of Gift Registry Services. In this capacity she will create and coordinate national and local advertising and marketing campaigns, develop ongoing training programs and local special events in support of the company's Nationwide Gift Registry.
Realizing the success of the Nationwide Gift Registry lies with how well the program is executed at store level, Ron Williams, senior vice president of Store Operations, said, "Service Merchandise has had a strong advertising and marketing program for the Nationwide Gift Registry, and the creation of the new position is an important step in maximizing the company's registry efforts at store level."
Besides developing marketing campaigns, Walther will interface with Service's store registry consultants, jewelry and hardlines buyers and representatives from their vendor community. To establish the Nationwide Gift Registry as the preferred registry service in the country, Walther plans a broad range of training programs, advertising and marketing programs on a national and local basis.
"What separates the Nationwide Gift Registry from registry programs offered by other retailers, is that it's a coast to coast, computerized registry network that allows individuals to register for any event in their life; including the more traditional bridal registries as well as newborn, graduation, anniversary and Christmas registries! In addition, registrants can choose from over 10,000 quality, name brand products in categories ranging from table top to sporting goods. Gift givers likewise can choose the perfect gift at competitive prices," said Walther.
Walther has been with Service Merchandise since 1989. Her former position as manager of Community Relations and a member of the original registry task force allowed her the opportunity to work with the gift registry program since its inception in 1990.
Service Merchandise is "America's Leading Jeweler" and the nation's number one catalog store retailer currently operating 371 stores in 37 states and two Kids Central USA stores. The company reported sales in 1992 in excess of $3.7 billion.
