LATEST ADVANCES IN SCLEROTHERAPY AND OTHER PHLEBOLOGY TREATMENTS
 FEATURED AT NASP ANNUAL MEETING
ENCINITAS, Calif., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 50 percent of American women and 10 percent of American men suffer from varicose and/or spider veins which are cosmetically unappealing and can cause varying degrees of discomfort. The latest advances in the treatment of these problems will be addressed at the Fifth Annual Congress of the North American Society of Phlebology at the Grand Hyatt on Union Square, San Francisco, Feb. 23-25.
Phlebology, the study and treatment of vein diseases and disorders, is of concern to physicians in dermatology, vascular surgery, internal medicine, gynecology, and family practice. The meeting, "Advances in Sclerotherapy -- Advances in Surgical & Medical Treatment of Venous Diseases," provides a forum for physicians in all specialities to exchange state-of-the-art knowledge and experience as well as present new research in this constantly changing field.
"The most common questions patients raise are whether their veins require treatment and which type of treatment would be best for them," said Mitchel P. Goldman, M.D., president of the NASP. "While there is still a place for the surgical treatment of large varicose veins, sclerotherapy (the injection of a solution into the vein causing its destruction and disappearance) has become the treatment of choice for most types of unwanted leg veins."
Wayne M. Marley, M.D., program chairman for the congress and secretary of NASP, said that the congress faculty includes internationally recognized experts who will discuss the latest developments in the use of sclerotherapy and other advances in the surgical treatment of vein disorders.
Here are just a few of the more than 50 educational sessions featured at the meeting:
-- Predisposing Factors of Starburst Varicosities
Neil S. Sadick, M.D., FACP; New York City
 -- Non-Invasive Evaluation
Helane Fronek, M.D.; La Jolla, Calif.
-- Role of Surgery in the Treatment of Varicose Veins
David E. Smith, M.D., FACS; Los Gatos, Calif.
-- Clinical Parameters of Predictive Value
 Robert A. Weiss, M.D.; Baltimore
-- Development of Phlebology in the United States
Walter P. de Groot, M.D., FACS; Seattle
 -- Venous Anatomy
John R. Pfeifer, M.D., FACS; Southfield, Mich.
 -- Sclerotherapy of Varicose Veins
 Pauline Raymond-Martimbeau, M.D.; Dallas
 -- Clinical Evaluation & Treatment
 Anton Butie, M.D.; Encinitas, Calif.
With more than 650 members, the North American Society of Phlebology is the largest phlebology society in the United States and is a member of the International Union of Phlebology. The NASP is primarily a teaching and educational organization, sponsoring several educational programs each year and publishing literature on developments in the field of phlebology within the United States.
