LASERTECHNICS ANNOUNCES AWARD OF THIRD EXCIMER LASER PATENT
 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Lasertechnics, Inc. (NASDAQ: LASX) today announced that it has been awarded a third key patent covering its proprietary technology which enables a large increase in both reliability and power for industrial excimer laser systems. "These inventions will result in the ability to perform reliable, precision, and high-throughput processing of a broad range of important materials, all by means of an instantaneous photochemical reaction which is initiated by intense ultra violet (UV) light," explained Robert Lantis, Lasertechnics chief engineer of excimer laser product development.
 The third patent, "Passive Magnetic Switch for Erecting Multiple- Stage, High-Pulse-Rate Voltage Multipliers," was filed by scientist Dietmar Rothe. "This new high-voltage transformer is being incorporated (along with the other two patents) into the laser, and efficiently and simply drives the discharge-pumped excimer laser without stress-related failure or other lifetime limitations commonly associated with conventional systems," remarked Lantis. "The end result for the industrial user is superior beam uniformity, pulse stability, efficiency, and higher energy outputs, in addition to greatly improved reliability. This translates directly into cost-effective solutions to problems throughout a broad range of industry: electronics, packaging, alloy fabrication, micro-machining of exotic materials, and large-scale photochemical processing. The invention can also be readily scaled to much higher outputs for use in other market applications, such as high power electron-beam material processing, an industry of the future. When extended into a different class of UV lasers which was under intense development through SDI (or, 'Star Wars'), we believe that we can now transform this extended-output machine into a very efficient, and reliable high-power industrial tool. Conservatively speaking, 100 Joules of uniform UV light at 5,000 watts output would be a good starting point for certain emerging UV processing applications in industry."
 "Six years ago our strategy was to develop new technology which would be a clear departure from the limitations of the existing base of industrial excimer lasers in terms of reliability, maintenance, beam quality, and output energy and stability," commented Louis Bieck, president of Lasertechnics. "Our approach does away with the usual stress placed upon critical components by using passive magnetic switches which virtually never wear out. Our 600 watt XL-600 laser design yields an isolated thyratron switch which operates at less than 5 percent of the typical, very stressful, high rate of current rise associated with conventional excimers. This third patent was the last hurdle. We see exciting new horizons in industrial applications for excimer laser materials processing. It is conceivable that the market potential for these industrial applications could approach $200 million/year in the next decade."
 Lasertechnics manufactures pulsed-CO2 laser marking systems and digital image printers, and is now actively seeking alliances for commercialization of its excimer laser technology.
