LARRY J. SPARROW NAMED PRESIDENT OF GTE TELEPHONE OPERATIONS-WEST AREA
IRVING, Texas, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Telephone Operations today announced that Larry J. Sparrow, formerly vice president- regulatory and governmental affairs, has been named president-West Area, effective immediately.
The West Area, headquartered in Thousand Oaks, Calif., is the largest of GTE Telephone Operations' four operating areas. It provides telecommunications service to more than 5.4 million access lines in seven Western states, including California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii.
Sparrow succeeds Charles A. Crain who, for the past year, has served in a dual capacity as executive vice president and chief operating officer-GTE Telephone Operations and as president-West Area. In his new assignment, Sparrow will report to Crain, who retains the position of executive vice president and chief operating officer.
"Larry's experience in both operations and regulatory affairs makes him well qualified to head the West Area," Crain said. "He will be leading an extremely capable team, and I know they join me in welcoming him aboard."
Sparrow, a 25-year GTE veteran, began his career with the company as an accountant for GTE Southeast in Durham, N.C. He has served in a variety of accounting, regulatory affairs and general management positions, including regional director-regulatory and economic analysis for the Northern Region, vice president-revenue requirements for GTE South Area and vice president-general manager in Lexington, Ky.
Kent Foster, president of GTE Telephone Operations, said: "Larry has been instrumental in developing a more progressive legislative and regulatory environment across GTE's 40-state operating territory. The skills he has developed as a senior executive of Telephone Operations will serve him well in his challenging new assignment."
Sparrow, who earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Illinois, is a leader in the telephone industry's efforts to gain entry into video services, and has directed a number of GTE's proceedings before the Federal Communications Commission. A replacement for Sparrow will be named later.
