LARGEST MEETING IN HISTORY OF NYPC USERS GROUP; IBM UNVEILS OS/2 2.0 TO
NEW YORK PC USERS GROUP; OS/2 2.0 NYPC BULLETIN BOARD ESTABLISHED
NEW YORK, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Before a standing room only audience of more than 1,500 computer enthusiasts, James A. Cannavino, IBM vice president and general manager Personal Systems, demonstrated the advanced 32-bit operating system, OS/2 (See Note A) Version 2.0 which began shipment Tuesday. Cannavino outlined the integrating capabilities of OS/2 2.0, running DOS, Windows (See Note B), and OS/2 16-bit and 32-bit applications simultaneously. The highlight of Cannavino's demonstration was the Workplace Shell (See Note A), a graphical user interface (GUI) featuring an innovative design that delivers advanced function with drag-and-drop simplicity.
"This product was shaped from start to finish by the feedback of users," Cannavino said. "We thought a big group of users should get the first look at what they helped us to create."
The meeting was the largest gathering in the ten-year history of the New York PC Users Group. David M. Kleiman, president of NYPC, said, "This was by far the largest, and certainly one of the most enthusiastic gatherings we have ever had."
Kleiman also announced that NYPC will add an OS/2 2.0 forum for end- user information exchange. Users may contact the NYPC bulletin board at 212-679-NYPC. The NYPC is the fourth largest computer users group in the nation with 60 special interest groups. The NYPC information line is 212-533-NYPC.
Cannavino fielded a wide-range of questions from dozens of the meetings' attendees. The OS/2 2.0 development team in Boca Raton, Fla. also participated in the audience question and answer session via an interactive satellite video link.
Capable of exploiting today's advanced hardware, 32-bit OS/2 2.0 offers true multitasking, allowing concurrent execution of multiple software programs, Cannavino explained. OS/2 2.0 ships with over 25 utility, entertainment and personal productivity mini-applications such as Calendar, NotePad, Calculator and To-Do list. AdobeType Manager (See Note B) for both Windows and OS/2 environments is also included.
Cannavino said users can order OS/2 2.0 via a toll-free number, 1-800-3-IBM-OS2. Through July 31, 1992 current Windows users can purchase OS/2 2.0 for $49, any DOS user can upgrade to OS/2 2.0 for $99 and new users can purchase OS/2 2.0 for $139. OS/2 2.0 is supported by HelpWare (See Note A) the most comprehensive service and support program in the personal computer industry. Users may contact the HelpCenter at 1-800-PS2-2227.
