 LARGEST FLU VACCINE SUPPLIER IN U.S. OBTAINS ADDITIONAL VACCINE;
 DISTRIBUTION BEGINS -- RESPONDS TO REPORTED SHORTAGES
 NEW YORK, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Responding to recent reports of influenza vaccine shortages, General Injectables and Vaccines, of Bastian, Va., today said it has received quantities of newly made flu vaccine and is beginning national distribution immediately. GIV is the largest independent distributor of flu vaccine in this country.
 "We have received a new supply of flu vaccine -- enough to satisfy demand -- and we now have access to further supplies," R.J. Kirk, chief operating officer of GIV, said. "We're working around the clock to get additional doses in the hands of doctors, clinics and hospitals for immunization of their patients."
 Unexpectedly high demand for the vaccine this year, plus an early start to the flu season, have created a greater than anticipated demand for the vaccine and shortages in some locations. General Injectables and Vaccines has already distributed 50 percent more vaccine this year than last.
 "We usually try to have all our vaccine distributed by early December, so people can get their shots before outbreaks of the flu begin," Kirk said. "Nonetheless, the Federal Centers for Disease Control is still recommending that Americans in the at-risk group go for a vaccination. So, we've located more vaccine and are making these additional shipments."
 According to the CDC, at-risk Americans include those over age 65; those with chronic lung and heart conditions; people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, kidney or blood disorders and impaired immune disorders.
