LARGER '93 COROLLA ADDS AIR BAG AND PERFORMANCE, RETAINS FUEL ECONOMY

LARGER '93 COROLLA ADDS AIR BAG AND PERFORMANCE, RETAINS FUEL ECONOMY
DETROIT, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. today introduced the all-new compact size '93 Toyota Corolla that combines increased roominess, refinement and performance, with no loss in fuel economy. A driver-side air bag supplemental restraint system is standard and an anti-lock braking system (ABS) is available on all Corolla models.
In addition, the seventh-generation Corolla is the quietest Corolla yet, thanks to noise-dampening techniques proven in the luxury-class Lexus and the midsize Toyota Camry.
Increasing in size from subcompact to compact, the Corolla comes in a four-door sedan in Standard, DX and LE trim levels and a five-door DX station wagon.
Increased interior dimensions -- head, leg, shoulder and hip room -- in both front and rear compartments provide added comfort. Corolla's front seats are mounted on the center tunnel and side rail, providing the full width beneath the front seats for rear-seat passenger foot room.
Corolla's highly rigid passenger compartment and front and rear crush zones are designed to offer occupant protection in the event of a collision. Side impact beams in the doors help resist intrusion if the car is struck laterally. New front adjustable seat belt anchors can be raised or lowered, more comfortably fitting various body types to encourage seat belt use.
The '93 Corolla surrounds its occupants with quietness that is structurally engineered into the drivetrain and body.
The new Corolla body combats wind noise with flush body edges and exterior moldings, a unitized windshield molding, and reduction of hood and trunk surface gaps from seven millimeters to four. Many of Corolla's body cavities are strategically fitted with foam rubber, foamed polyurethane and other sealants.
Corolla's style for 1993 conveys an outward expression of the car's internal quality. Its appearance is enhanced by subtle details, such as the narrowing of hood, trunk lid, door and body panel gaps to fine lines.
The most affordable Toyota Corolla sedan is powered by a refined 1.6-liter, 16-valve twin-cam engine with 105 hp at 5,800 rpm and 100 ft.-lb. torque at 4,800 rpm. It is available with a standard five-speed manual overdrive transmission or optional three-speed automatic.
The chassis is tuned for directional stability and handling feel, with wider tread, rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel independent MacPherson strut suspension and a rear stabilizer bar. Brakes are power ventilated front disc and rear drum, with optional four-wheel ABS to help maintain direction and steering control during severe braking under most road conditions.
The standard Corolla offers a strong complement of standard features. Examples include color-keyed bumpers, full-wheel covers, auto-off headlights, dual cupholders, fully lined trunk, convenient remote hood, trunk and fuel-door releases, center console box, assist grips, dome light and reclining front bucket seats with adjustable headrests.
Options for the standard Corolla include ABS, air conditioning, power steering and several audio systems.
Corolla DX grade includes a four-door sedan and an all-new, five- door station wagon, with a new 1.8-liter, 115 hp engine that delivers additional power, torque, quietness and fuel economy.
The new four-cylinder engine powering Corolla DX and LE produces a torque curve similar to that of a V6 engine, achieving 90 percent of its torque from 1,500 to 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 115 ft.-lb. at 2,800 rpm.
The strong low-end torque pays a dividend in terms of NVH, standing- start acceleration, and responsive performance in traffic. The engine is available with a five-speed manual overdrive transmission or an optional four-speed, electronically controlled, automatic overdrive transmission.
Additional standard features include black bodyside molding, dual manual remote-control outside mirrors, cold kit with rear defroster, full fabric door trim with dual door pockets, fabric covered seats and headrest, passenger side vanity mirror, rear-seat headrests, intermittent wipers, digital clock, rear luggage lamp, and for the wagon, rear cargo cover and power door lock for the rear hatch.
A power sunroof is optional on Corolla DX Sedan, and power windows and locks are an option for Corolla DX Wagon. A rear wiper is optional on the station wagon for improved rearward vision in inclement weather. A tachometer is available on DX models equipped with the five-speed transmission.
The top-of-the-line Corolla LE sedan provides the most standard features in the Corolla line, with exclusive options.
LE standard features include a tachometer, tilt wheel, air conditioning, power windows and locks, cruise control and a four-speed electronically controlled overdrive transmission. A Deluxe ETR radio with four speakers is standard.
Also standard are four-way adjustable seats with vertical seat adjustment, and upgraded seat and door trim.
Color-keyed door handles, power mirrors and bodyside moldings are standard, as are variable intermittent wipers, dual visor vanity mirrors, and an LE rear trunk garnish.
Corolla LE options include ABS, alloy wheels, power sunroof and a Deluxe ETR/Cassette with four speakers.
EPA city/highway fuel economy estimates for the 1.6-liter engine are 27/34 mpg with the 5-speed manual and 26/29 mpg with 3-speed automatic. For the 1.8-liter engine, estimates are 27/33 mpg with the 5-speed manual and 26/33 mpg with 4-speed automatic.
