LAND ROVER HEADS INTO NEW YEAR WITH SALES SURGE December Sales set new monthly and quarterly records

LANHAM, Md., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sales of Land Rover-built sport utility vehicles, the Range Rover County LWB, Range Rover County and Land Rover Defender 110, reached their highest levels ever in December, totaling 709 units. The sales figure is a 48-percent increase over the same month a year ago. For the calendar year, sales totaled 4,234, up 28 percent over the same period in 1991.
"The record sales pace we're enjoying is driven by consumer demand for our new product," said Charles R. Hughes, president, Land Rover North America, Inc. "The flagship Range Rover County LWB has been in short supply, further evidence of the popularity of premium sport utility vehicles."
The December performance comes on the heels of record-setting October and November sales results, completing the most successful quarter in company history. Land Rover officials attributed the sales surge to the company's unique products and the recovering economy.
Since its U.S. introduction in 1987, more than 23,000 Range Rovers have been sold.
The County LWB has been hailed by the automotive press as the gold standard in the sport utility class. It features the world's first electronic air suspension system in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, allowing the body to be raised or lowered over a range of 5.1 inches for greater on- and off-road comfort and performance.
On Aug. 1, 1992, the company changed its name from Range Rover of North America, Inc. to Land Rover North America, Inc. as the first phase of an ambitious expansion plan to increase its product offerings in the U.S. and establish an exclusive dealer network called Land Rover Centres. Importation of 500 limited-edition Land Rover Defender 110 vehicles coincided with the new corporate identity.
