LAND O'LAKES FOCUSES ON SERVING DIVERSE, CHANGING NEEDS OF FARMERS

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- "Land O'Lakes has a vision, a vision that projects us into the next century," said Stan Zylstra, chairman of the Land O'Lakes board of directors at the cooperative's 72nd annual meeting, Feb. 24-25 in Minneapolis. The theme for the meeting, attended by more than 3,000 members of the cooperative, was "Pursuing Our Vision."
"Our vision is based on what we must do to serve the diverse and changing needs of members in the 21st century," he said. To achieve the cooperative's vision of the future, Zylstra said Land O'Lakes will focus on stimulating growth in its four core businesses -- Feed, Seed, Agronomy and Dairy Foods. He also stressed the importance of the full involvement of all individuals who have a stake in Land O'Lakes.
"Our farm supply cooperative system is a leader," said Zylstra, adding that since the Cenex/Land O'Lakes joint venture in 1987, "we have seen remarkable levels of growth in our feed, seed and agronomy businesses." He credited members and employees with making the growth possible. "Our vision is to accelerate our growth in the future," he said. "Land O'Lakes objective is to be a partner to the member seeking a long-term assured supply of high-quality products and services."
In Dairy Foods, Zylstra said the cooperative would continue to commit as much of the members' milk to the production of value-added products as possible. Land O'Lakes vision includes strong, focused growth in branded products and a commitment to helping Land O'Lakes dairy producer-members succeed.
"Our record-setting performance in 1992 is a result of a total system effort," said Zylstra, "and the member's active involvement in building our businesses, strengthening our system and living our values will be the primary ways by which we pursue our vision."
Zylstra also noted the cooperative's strong performance in recent years in returning cash to members. "In 1992, we returned a record $36.8 million in cash, and we're aiming even higher in 1993," he said. The improvement in cash payments results from a commitment made by the board of directors and management to increase returns, while maintaining a strong balance sheet and stimulating long-term growth.
"Achieving our vision," said Zylstra, "also includes being an active participant in our nation's governmental and regulatory system on behalf of members." He noted that in 1992 the entire board of directors traveled to Washington, D.C. to discuss key issues with government officials.
In closing, he described Land O'Lakes international development activities where the cooperative is helping farmers in other parts of the world. At the same time, he added, Land O'Lakes is developing long- term business relationships that will enable it to grow in the future.
Land O' Lakes is a Twin Cities-based food and agricultural cooperative owned by farmers, ranchers and local cooperatives in 15 states. It provides agricultural supplies to 1,600 local cooperatives serving 300,000 farmers and procures milk from more than 5,000 Upper Midwest dairy producers. The cooperative is widely recognized for the more than 600 food products it markets in the United States.
