LAIS TAKES ACTION IN PATENT DISPUTE
IRVINE, Calif., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Interventional

Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: LAIS) announced today that it has filed a complaint for a declaratory judgment in a patent dispute between LAIS and Pillco Limited Partnership. The civil action was filed on May 9, 1992, in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
According to Robert E. Wall, chairman and chief executive officer of LAIS, the company has initiated this legal action based on its belief that it does not infringe any valid claims of the patents in question. The patents relate to the use of pulsed lasers in the body.
"We have filed this claim to protect certain rights of LAIS in view of allegations made by Pillco during ongoing negotiations with LAIS," Wall said.
Wall said that even though a suit has been filed, management will continue to seek a reasonable business solution to this issue and is hopeful that both parties can work together to accomplish that objective.
Advanced Interventional Systems pioneered excimer laser angioplasty and is the technological leader in the development of laser systems for cardiovascular applications. On Jan. 31, 1992, the company received the first and only approval to date, from the Food and Drug Administration to market an excimer laser angioplasty system designed to clear blocked arteries in the heart.
