LAFARGE CORPORATION REPORTS THIRD QUARTER RESULTS
RESTON, Va., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Lafarge Corporation

(NYSE, TSE & ME: LAF), one of the leading construction materials companies in the United States and Canada, today reported an improvement in earnings for the third quarter of 1992.
Net income rose 5 percent to $45.9 million compared with $43.8 million in the third quarter of 1991. Earnings per share, at 78 cents, were essentially unchanged from the same period in 1991 due to the greater number of shares outstanding this year. Net sales for the quarter fell 7 percent to $505.1 million from $543.4 million in 1991, due in part to a drop in the value of the Canadian dollar. Results for the most recent quarter included divestment gains.
"In spite of sluggish economic conditions that resulted in lower sales and shipments, Lafarge Corporation was able to report higher earnings, thanks to gains realized upon the sale of marginal assets," said Michel Rose, Lafarge's president and chief executive officer. "We have continued our focus on cost reduction and tighter management of assets, including working capital."
Product shipments in the third quarter were below 1991 levels due mostly to the extreme weakness of construction markets in central and eastern Canada. Cement sales volume totaled 4.1 million tons, a 1 percent decrease from 1991. Aggregate shipments of 15.2 million tons were off 3 percent, while ready-mixed concrete volumes fell 6 percent to 1.5 million cubic meters.
For the first nine months of 1992, Lafarge Corporation recorded a net loss of $12.7 million, which is $18.3 million better than last year. Net sales for the first nine months of 1992 were $1,130.7 million, compared with $1,188.3 million in 1991.
Lafarge currently operates 16 full-production cement plants, three cement grinding facilities and more than 100 distribution facilities throughout the United States and Canada, with an annual productive capacity of more than 15 million tons of cement. The company also has more than 450 construction materials operations and is one of the largest suppliers of ready-mixed concrete and aggregates in North America. Systech Environmental Corporation, a Lafarge subsidiary, is a leader in co-processing, or recycling industrial waste into fuel for cement kilns.
Based in Reston, Lafarge Corporation is a Fortune 500 company with 8,300 employees and 1991 sales of $1.6 billion. Its majority shareholder, Lafarge Coppee of Paris, is one of the world's largest producers of building materials with operations in 35 countries and 1991 sales of $5.6 billion.
