 LAFARGE CORPORATION ANNOUNCES FIRST-QUARTER RESULTS
RESTON, Va., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Lafarge Corporation

(NYSE, TSE & ME: LAF), one of the leading construction materials companies in the United States and Canada, today announced a net loss for the quarter ended March 31, 1992, of $77.5 million, or $1.34 per share. The first-quarter figure represents a slight improvement from last year, when the company posted a loss of $79.1 million, or $1.42 per share.
Lafarge Corporation historically experiences a loss in the first quarter because product shipments soften during the winter months and most major plant maintenance projects are undertaken and expensed during this slow period.
Net sales for the first three months of 1992 were $211.1 million, compared with $216.3 million in 1991. Cement shipments of 1.8 million tons were flat compared with the first quarter of 1991, with improved volumes in the United States offset by declining shipments in central and eastern Canada. Ready-mixed concrete sales volumes fell 2 percent while aggregate sales rose 12 percent.
Robert W. Murdoch, Lafarge Corporation's president and chief executive officer, said that Lafarge's operating loss in the first quarter was essentially unchanged from last year, a reflection of the continued low level of construction activity in many North American markets.
Murdoch noted that recent economic developments, such as the rebound in housing starts and stabilization of lower interest rates, have provided encouraging news. "With most economic indicators now pointing upward, we expect business conditions to improve as the 1992 construction season unfolds," he said.
Lafarge currently operates 16 full-production cement plants, four cement grinding facilities and more than 100 distribution facilities throughout the United States and Canada, with an annual productive capacity of more than 15 million tons of cement. The company also has more than 450 construction materials operations and is one of the largest suppliers of ready-mixed concrete and aggregates in North America. Systech Environmental Corporation, a Lafarge subsidiary, is a leader in co-processing, or recycling industrial waste into fuel for cement kilns.
Based in Reston, Lafarge Corporation is a Fortune 500 company with 8,300 employees and 1991 sales of $1.6 billion. Its majority shareholder, Lafarge Coppee of Paris, is one of the world's largest producers of building materials with operations in 35 countries and 1991 sales of $5.6 billion.
