LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO AWARDED SAAO-AIG LEADERSHIP AWARD

NEW YORK, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The South African-American Organization (SAAO) and American International Group, Inc. (AIG) today awarded Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the South African musical group, the first SAAO-AIG Leadership Award recognizing the group's efforts as global emissaries of South African culture and their support of Ikamva Labantu ("The Future of our Nation and People"), a South African organization that builds day care centers and senior housing in the townships of Cape Town. The Award was presented by South African Ambassador Franklin Sonn at a reception following Ladysmith Black Mambazo's concert at Town Hall in Manhattan.

In presenting the award, Ambassador Sonn stated "We are a joyful and singing people. Song is constantly used to reflect our hopes and aspirations, as well as our feelings of joy and sorrow. In this respect, Ladysmith Black Mambazo represents the spirit of the democratic South Africa."

"We are pleased to honor Ladysmith Black Mambazo for their commitment to improving the quality of life of South African citizens, as well as their efforts to promote South African culture around the world," said Marco V. Masotti, SAAO President. "Their dedication is a shining example for all involved in helping the new South Africa meet the enormous challenges it faces."
