LADBROKE: WAGERING DURING ADIOS WEEK UP OVER 1991 DESPITE PRESS STRIKE
MEADOW LANDS, Pa., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Ladbroke at The Meadows announced today that wagering handle during Adios Week 1992 was up over 1991 despite a continued newspaper strike in Pittsburgh and steady rain on Adios Day itself.
The wagering handle for the Adios Day afternoon program set an all-time track record of $1,031,754. The previous track record was set on Adios Day last year when the number was $999,997.
Wagering handle for harness racing on The Meadows this Adios Week totaled an impressive $4,046,784, compared to $3,753,910, an increase of 8 percent over 1991. Wagering handle was up every day of Adios Week except for Tuesday night when it was down only slightly.
"We were very encouraged," track spokesman Bob Sabot said. "The newspaper strike and the rain were problems that we had to work through but the numbers were impressive."
On-track attendance during Adios Week dropped from 30,202 in 1991 to 28,750 in 1992 -- a drop of 5 percent. However, attendance numbers on-track are not considered a good barometer to how the track is doing because of the continued buildup of Ladbroke off-track wagering sites in Pennsylvania. The on-track attendance numbers do not reflect the thousands who watched races at New Castle, Greensburg, Harmar Township and Johnstown, or wagered at home through the Call-A-Bet system, the spokesman said.
