LAC VIEUX DESERT WITHDRAWS SUPPORT FOR AUTOWORLD CASINO

SUTTONS BAY, Mich., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Lac Vieux Desert Indian Community has withdrawn its support for a proposed gaming casino in the former AutoWorld property in downtown Flint.
The tribe had signed a memorandum of understanding with Migizi Entertainment Inc. That was an agreement to allow nothing more than the exploration of possible development of the facility into a gaming casino.
"We have now notified Migizi Entertainment Inc. that we have no further interest in exploring that possibility and we have terminated all associations with the AutoWorld project at this time by withdrawing support for the memorandum of understanding," said Tribal Chairman John McGeshick on Monday. He noted that the memorandum did not constitute a management agreement that would have allowed Migizi to operate a casino with the tribe.
"We don't feel the circumstances in Flint are in the best interests of all the tribes of Michigan," McGeshick said from Suttons Bay, where he was participating in discussions with officials from Gov. John Engler's office regarding development of an on-reservation gaming compact.
"Our top priority is protecting what we have at home and ensuring the integrity of tribal gaming," said McGeshick. The seven federally recognized Native American tribes in Michigan are hoping to reach agreement with Gov. Engler on a compact that will allow continued operation of the eight existing casinos in Northern Michigan. Those discussions are continuing in a positive direction.
The Lac Vieux Desert Indian Community is located in Watersmeet in the western Upper Peninsula.
