LABOR DEPARTMENT GRANT WILL AID LAID-OFF AEROSPACE WORKERS

LOS ANGELES, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Aircraft Co. has received a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to assist employees affected by its current round of layoffs.
The grant, first of its kind awarded to a private firm, will provide re-employment and retraining services to as many as 12,000 former and soon-to-be laid off Hughes California workers. It will include needs- related payments and training opportunities to those workers losing their jobs as a result of decreases in Department of Defense programs.
The funding will enable the company, working with both private and public agencies, to provide up to 18 months of readjustment and support services to dislocated workers. Job opportunities nationally, and in California, will be explored to help participants establish new careers.
Under the program, Career Resource Centers and field sites will be established in various locations in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties where Hughes has facilities. They will be staffed with experienced employment and training advisors to help participants with the job search process.
Portions of the program may be adopted for use in similar situations throughout the nation.
